Early life:

Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee. Brought up in a Hindu Brahmin family, Vajpayee was introduced to Sanskrit at an early age. He was sent to the Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Gwalior to attain education and after his father joined the Anglo-Vernacular Middle (AVM) School in Barnagar, Ujjain district, he followed him and got admission there. 

After completing his schooling, Vajpayee attended Victoria College, which is now known as Maharani Laxmi Bai Govt. College of Excellence, from where he pursued a Bachelor of arts degree in Hindi, English, and Sanskrit. He went to the DAV College, Kanpur, from where he completed his post-graduation in Political sciences (MA). 

As a young man, Vajpayee joined the Arya Kumar Sabha in Gwalior and became its general secretary in 1944. He later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and was highly influenced by Babasaheb Apte. This was also the beginning of his political career.

Personal life:

Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee remained unmarried all his life. However, it wasn’t that love never took him under its wings. It is said that when Atal Ji studied at the Victoria College in Gwalior, he came across Rajkumari Kaul, who was his batchmate. Atalji fell in love with her at first sight. The times were orthodox and did not allow a one to one interaction between Individuals of the opposite gender. 

Atalji somehow wrote a letter to Mrs. Kaul and kept it inside a library book. Mrs. Kaul also had a soft corner for Atalji in her heart but due to caste differences, her parents got her married and sent her to Delhi. Rajkumari was married to Professor BN Kaul. 

Years later, when Atalji met Rajkumari again in Delhi, he became great friends with her husband and started living with their family. Atalji later adopted her daughter Namita Bhattacharya and the Kaul family was his family. Mrs. Rajkumari Kaul died in 2014. When Atalji passed away in 2018, his final rites were performed by Namita Bhattacharya.

In 1968 Atalji was elected as the 11th President of Akhil Bharatiya Jana Sangh and served till 1972. He was preceded by Deen Dayal Upadhyaya and was succeeded by L. K. Advani. In 1980, he became the Founder – President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He served the position till 1986 and was succeeded by L.K. Advani. From 1962 to 1967, he served as the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha for his Uttar Pradesh constituency, and from 1986 to 1991 he served as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha for his Madhya Pradesh constituency.

Talking about his Lok Sabha career, he served as a member of Parliament from 1957–1962 for the Balrampur constituency. From 1967–1971, he again served as a member of Parliament for the Balrampur constituency. From 1971–1977 he served as a member of Parliament from the Gwalior constituency. From 1977–1984 he served as a member of Parliament for the New Delhi constituency. From 1991–2009, he served as a member of Parliament for the Lucknow constituency. 

He served as Minister of External Affairs from 16 May 1996 – 1 June 1996, under the leadership of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. He became the 10 Prime Ministers of India in 1996 and served from  16 May 1996 – 1 June 1996 and then from 19 March 1998 – 22 May 2004, with Shankar Dayal Sharma, K. R. Narayanan, and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as his Presidents, respectively.
