The Academy Awards, also known as Oscars, first met India in 1957, when Mehboob Khan’s Mother India was formally nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Since then, films such as Lagaan and Salaam Bombay have been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Despite the fact that no Indian film has received an Academy Award, there are individuals who have made India proud. Few Indians have taken home the Oscar statuette, from costume designer Bhanu Athaiya to music composer A.R. Rahman.

This year, there have been many clutter-busting awards, including works by people of color and members of marginalized groups. In terms of Indian nominations, this year’s Academy Awards have no Indian nominees. There have, however, been many Indian nominees and winners of the coveted Academy Award.
